The best time to visit Newgrange depends on which visit you mean. An ordinary tour lets you enter the chamber on a booked daytime visit. Being inside at sunrise around the winter solstice is a separate opportunity, allocated through a lottery.

For a first visit, my recommendation is May, with September a good alternative. Both fall within the usual season for combining Newgrange with Knowth. December is the choice for the solstice itself, but a trip then needs very different expectations.

Quick Answer:

May is my recommendation for the best time to visit Newgrange, with September a good alternative for the combined Newgrange and Knowth tour. Ordinary chamber visits use the official booking calendar. Sunrise access inside at the winter solstice is allocated separately through a lottery, and sunlight is never guaranteed.

May gives you a useful combination of the main tour season and longer days for exploring the Boyne Valley. September also suits a visit to both monuments. Neither month guarantees dry weather, and the tombs still require the appropriate ticket.

June, July, and August work just as well if your dates are fixed by school vacations. I would choose a tour time around the journey from your accommodation, rather than assume the first departure is automatically better. Chamber entry is controlled throughout the day.

More Help Choosing Your Travel Dates

Winter suits a shorter visit centered on Newgrange and the visitor center. Knowth normally operates from March through October, with opening and closing days set by the current calendar. Our best time to visit Ireland guide helps fit this stop into a wider trip.

The official booking calendar lists different experiences, and the names matter. The Brú na Bóinne Tour + Newgrange Chamber takes about three hours. It combines the visitor center exhibition, Knowth, and entry to the Newgrange chamber during the main season.

The Newgrange Tour + Exhibition takes about two hours and includes the chamber, but not Knowth. The Knowth Tour + Exhibition also takes about two hours, but does not take you to Newgrange. Visitors do not enter the chambers at Knowth.

Comparison of combined Newgrange and Knowth tours, separate monument tours, visitor center admission, and winter solstice lottery access

I would choose the combined tour for a first visit when it is available. Knowth adds a different group of mounds and carved stones, and the extra time is useful context for Newgrange. A visitor-center-only admission does not include either monument.

Visiting Newgrange at the Winter Solstice

Newgrange’s passage and chamber align with the rising sun around the winter solstice in December. Light enters through the roof-box above the doorway. On suitable mornings it can illuminate the chamber for up to 17 minutes, but cloud can prevent the effect.

The winter solstice lottery allocates the limited places inside at sunrise. An ordinary tour ticket does not provide that access. Applications are online, with one entry per email address; applicants must be over ten, and anyone under 18 must have an adult accompanying them.

Use the current lottery homepage for the entry period and the solstice your application covers. The official pages can retain information from different application rounds. A winning place is nontransferable, and the selected visitor must bring photographic identification.

Gathering outside the monument is a separate arrangement from entering the chamber. OPW has welcomed the public outside on solstice mornings.

Check the OPW winter solstice page for announcements, and confirm parking, shuttles, and road restrictions with the visitor center before traveling. Do not assume that an outside visit includes chamber entry afterward.

I would stay nearby if attending at dawn, especially when traveling with children. The ordinary daytime bus is not a substitute for the special morning transport arrangements. OPW also announces solstice livestream information for people watching from home.

Booking Your Tickets

Book through the Heritage Ireland page and its official ticket link. OPW says it has no authorized third-party ticket resellers. Every member of your party needs a ticket, including infants, so count everyone before choosing the slot.

For the main April-to-October season, tickets are normally released 30 days ahead, at midnight Irish time. The winter booking window is shorter, generally seven days. Follow the live calendar for dates around the seasonal changeovers; an unavailable date may simply be outside the release window.

Planning a Visit from Dublin

Cancellations can return to the online calendar. If the combined tour is unavailable, read the alternatives carefully: a Knowth ticket does not give you the Newgrange chamber visit you may have come for.

Ordinary tour options are suspended for the solstice mornings, and the visitor center also closes over Christmas and on New Year’s Day. Check the official calendar for the exact suspension and closure dates before planning a winter visit.

Getting to the Visitor Center

All monument tours start at Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre near Donore, at Eircode A92 EH5C, on the south side of the River Boyne. Set your navigation to that address. Driving straight to Newgrange does not give you entry.

After the exhibition, visitors walk across the river to the shuttle buses. The walk from the center is about 300 meters. Allow for parking and reaching the reception before your booked start; the monument visit is only one part of the experience.

For public transport, the current Local Link route 163 connects Drogheda’s MacBride railway station with the visitor center. Match the return service to the full tour duration. Older advice referring only to route 188 misses the present connection.

If you prefer an organized journey from Dublin, our Newgrange and Boyne Valley day tours from Dublin guide compares transport options. Read the actual inclusions: a bus trip through the valley and a tour that includes the Newgrange chamber are different bookings.

Access and What to Bring

The passage into Newgrange is narrow and low in places, with steps and an enclosed chamber. Anyone with restricted mobility or concerns about enclosed spaces should contact the site before choosing a ticket. The exhibition and the chamber have different access conditions.

The OPW social guides show the sequence from arrival to the exhibition, bridge walk, buses, and monuments. They are useful for families or anyone who wants to understand the visit in advance. There are outdoor paths and exposed waiting areas even on a tour that includes an indoor chamber.

More Practical Ireland Guides

Bring a waterproof coat and shoes with grip. For a solstice morning, warm layers matter because you may spend a long period outside before daylight. Photography is not permitted inside the Newgrange passage or chamber, so take your photographs outside.

Where to Stay for an Early Visit

Drogheda and its surrounding countryside give you overnight options for an early start at Brú na Bóinne. These three properties offer different settings: a rural stone courtyard, a B&B on the north side of town, and a house off Dublin Road.

For a solstice visit, arrange the journey from your accommodation to the official departure point in advance. A nearby room alone does not solve dawn transport, and a property north of the river does not change the requirement to start at the visitor center.

The Garden Rooms at The Courtyard, Townley Hall is an apartment option at Townley Hall near Tullyallen, outside Drogheda. The rural approach and stone courtyard buildings suit a stay where the countryside setting is part of the appeal.

The bedrooms have exposed stone walls and wooden furniture. I would choose this setting for an overnight trip with a car, while allowing time to drive around to the visitor center on the south side of the Boyne.

MapleHouse B&B

MapleHouse B&B is on North Road Upper on the north side of Drogheda. Its traditional hall and staircase lead to rooms with en-suite bathrooms, and there is a separate breakfast dining room.

This is a useful option if you prefer a B&B in town to a rural apartment. The staircase is a reason to ask about the location of your room if steps are difficult. For a dawn departure, arrange breakfast timing directly with the property.

Chez Sé

Chez Sé is in Beaubec off Dublin Road, on the south side of Drogheda. The house has a conservatory breakfast room looking toward the garden, with a patio and outdoor seating.

The shared sitting room gives you somewhere beyond the bedroom to spend part of the evening. I would consider it for a residential base, with transport arranged for the early visit rather than relying on a walk to the site.

Before You Book

  • Choose the combined tour if you want both Knowth and the Newgrange chamber.
  • All monument tours start at Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre, south of the Boyne.
  • Ordinary tour tickets do not provide solstice sunrise chamber access.
  • Use the current official lottery and event notices for the relevant December visit.

Newgrange Timing FAQs

These answers cover ordinary tours and the separate solstice arrangements.

What is the best month to visit Newgrange?

May is my recommendation for a first visit, with September a good alternative. Both fall within the usual season for combining Newgrange and Knowth. Use the current calendar to choose a tour that includes the Newgrange chamber.

Can you visit Newgrange in winter?

Yes, ordinary Newgrange visits operate in winter, subject to the booking calendar and holiday closures. Knowth normally has a March-to-October season. Ordinary tours are suspended on solstice mornings, and the visitor center closes over Christmas and on New Year’s Day. Check the official calendar for exact dates.

Do you need a lottery ticket for every Newgrange visit?

No. The lottery is for the limited chamber places at sunrise around the winter solstice. Ordinary daytime chamber tours use the official ticket system. A standard tour booking does not give you a solstice sunrise place.

Is the winter solstice sunlight guaranteed?

No. The roof-box aligns with the rising sun around the winter solstice, but cloud can prevent sunlight reaching the chamber. A lottery place provides access for the allocated morning, not a guarantee of the light effect.

How long should you allow for Newgrange and Knowth?

Allow about three hours for the combined Brú na Bóinne Tour + Newgrange Chamber. The Newgrange Tour + Exhibition and Knowth Tour + Exhibition each take about two hours. The Knowth option does not include Newgrange, and visitors do not enter the Knowth chambers.

Can you drive directly to Newgrange for your tour?

No. All monument tours start at Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre near Donore, Eircode A92 EH5C. Visitors continue from there using the official shuttle arrangements. Navigate to the visitor center, rather than the monument itself.

Your Newgrange Visit

May is my first choice for the best time to visit Newgrange, particularly if you want the combined Knowth tour. September offers the same basic opportunity within the usual main season. Choose the ticket that includes the monument and chamber you want to see.

For the winter solstice, decide whether your plan is a lottery chamber place, the outdoor gathering, or watching the livestream. Each offers a different experience. None can guarantee a clear sunrise.
